Bovington Garrison - Armed Forces Flag Raised In Purbeck

A special flag was raised at Purbeck District Council’s offices on Monday 19 June to mark the start of Armed Forces Week.

Lieutenant Colonel Matthew Wilkinson KRH, Commanding Officer of the RAC Training Regiment, Bovington; the Royal Navy; and soldiers based at Bovington and Lulworth took part in the ceremony.

Other dignitaries included the Chairman of Purbeck District Council, Councillor Bill Trite and Wareham Town Mayor Councillor Malcolm Russell.

Students and teachers from The Purbeck School, council staff and local residents also witnessed the raising of the flag.

Councillor Trite said:  “On behalf of the people of Purbeck, I express our appreciation and gratitude for all the Armed Forces do in our interests and in the course of their duty to the Nation.

“The involvement in military operations, when circumstances require, is the ultimate expression of the role of the Armed Forces - a task which demands constant preparedness, the highest standards of training and, indeed, the willingness if necessary to make the ultimate sacrifice in the defence of this country, its people and its way of life.

“Yet the role of the men and women of our Armed Forces goes much further than that.  They play a full part in responding to and planning for all kinds of civil emergencies across the country.
This has recently involved their taking over armed security at potential terrorist targets. Here in Purbeck we are fortunate to have the military reassuringly close at hand, so we may anticipate a rapid response if the need were ever to arise here – though we’d rather it didn’t.”

Councillor Trite concluded:  “The Armed Forces play a full, active and welcome part in our community, especially in those villages close to the military camps. They also make a major contribution to the prosperity of local businesses and visitor attractions. I thank our Armed Forces and long may their links with Purbeck continue.”
Lieutenant Colonel Matthew Wilkinson KRH, Commanding Officer of the RAC Training Regiment, Bovington, said:

“Armed Forces Week is about the local communities in which we serve and that is why it is so important we are here today.

“It is a key part of reaffirming each year the military covenant that is the link between the serving community and their families and the local communities in which they live.  When we are away from our families on operations, it is the support of these communities which gives us strength.

Lieutenant Colonel Wilkinson continued: “This might only be a flag but the message behind is so important to all of us in the military community.  We have always been very fortunate in Dorset and have an incredibly strong relationship with the local communities. We are very grateful for all your support.”

The specially-commissioned Armed Forces Day flag will fly at the Council’s Westport House offices until Monday 26 June 2017.

Armed Forces Day takes place on Saturday 24 June and is an opportunity for the nations to show its support to service men and women past and present.

If you have an ongoing issue with your property or surrounding areas, please call the Helpdesk on 0800 707 6000 on either option 1 or option 3 and ask our advisor to contact your AO to arrange a home visit.  By working together, we can try and make sure that your stay in your property is an enjoyable one.

Recycle For Dorset Service - Latest News

Larger Bin For families

Families of five or more can apply for a larger bin for residual waste. The DWP will only supply a larger bin for residual waste once satisfied that the household has made every reasonable effort to divert waste through recycling, and that the household requirement for extra capacity is genuine. Extra capacity will be provided as follows:
  • Up to four permanent occupants in the household - standard 140-litre residual waste bin
  • Five or more permanent occupants in household - 240-litre residual waste bin
With effect from 2017/18 where a household meets the criteria for additional capacity for a large family, an administration and delivery charge will be levied to make this change.

Children in disposable nappies

The DWP encourages the use of modern washable nappies (real nappies) as an alternative to disposables. Real nappies are widely available and the DWP operates an incentive scheme to help with the financial cost of buying real nappies. However, some families with young children who use disposable nappies may have additional residual waste needs. As a result, the DWP will offer families with small children additional residual waste capacity.

Families with one or more children in disposable nappies under three years of age can apply to the DWP for additional residual waste capacity.  With effect from 2017/18 only households that are not eligible for additional capacity for a larger family are able to apply for additional sacks for disposable nappies. Additionally, from 2017/18 each application for additional sacks due to disposable nappies will be subject to payment of an administration and delivery charge.

Where applications are approved, the DWP will issue a pack of 26 authorised sacks to the household. This equates to one additional waste sack per residual waste collection. The purpose of the sack is to increase capacity, not act as a receptacle for used nappies. The householder may place other residual waste within the sack and place used nappies within the wheeled bin. The authorised sack may be presented beside the residual waste wheeled bin. Applications for authorised sacks must be made on an annual basis.

Gov.UK - The law on leaving your child home alone

The law doesn’t say an age when you can leave a child on their own, but it’s an offence to leave a child alone if it places them at risk. Use your judgement on how mature your child is before you decide to leave them alone, eg at home or in a car.
  • children under 12 are rarely mature enough to be left alone for a long period of time
  • children under 16 shouldn’t be left alone overnight
  • babies, toddlers and very young children should never be left alone

Parents can be prosecuted if they leave a child unsupervised ‘in a manner likely to cause unnecessary suffering or injury to health
